Who were they?

Have you ever thought of being a top secret spy? Do you think you would put yourself in danger to help your country? That is what Eileen Nearne did.

What did they do?

Do you know who fought in the Second World War? Eileen Nearne was a top secret spy for the British Government against the Nazis. She worked undercover in France. She was captured and treated very badly, but she survived the war and never gave away her secrets or the people she had worked with (including her sister who was also a top secret spy).

When they lived

Do you know when the Second World War happened? That is when Eileen was a spy, but she moved to Torquay later and lived here until 2010.

Interesting fact

Eileen Nearne was captured and treated very badly as a prisoner by the Nazis. Even so, she actually managed to escape by herself from the prison she was in. She walked until she found the Allied Army, who rescued her. They did not know she was a spy - it was top secret after all! She was then put in prison by the British soldiers until it could all be sorted out.
